Amy Schumer claimed John Cena was “actually on top of her” during their movie scene together.

Amy Schumer has built an entire career on saying exactly what everyone else is too afraid to say — and her unforgettable stories about filming Trainwreck with John Cena are still making fans laugh years later.

The 2015 romantic comedy became a massive hit thanks to its mix of awkward humor, emotional moments, and wildly memorable characters. While the movie featured several hilarious scenes, one moment involving Cena’s character quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the entire film.

In Trainwreck, Cena played Steven, an ultra-intense gym fanatic who briefly dates Amy’s character before her life takes a different direction. Covered in muscles and obsessed with fitness, Steven was written as an exaggerated, over-the-top personality — and Cena completely embraced the role in a way nobody expected at the time.

Before the movie, most fans only knew John Cena as one of WWE’s biggest superstars. He was famous for dominating wrestling rings, delivering iconic catchphrases, and becoming one of the most recognizable athletes in entertainment history. Few people expected him to suddenly appear in a comedy movie showing off perfect comedic timing alongside one of Hollywood’s boldest comedians.

But according to Amy Schumer, working with Cena turned out to be one of the funniest experiences she had during filming. During a now-viral interview on the Australian talk show The Project, Amy was asked how she managed to keep a straight face while filming their extremely awkward scene together.

True to her style, Schumer answered with a joke that instantly shocked the audience and exploded across social media. Her comments quickly made headlines everywhere, with fans praising her fearless sense of humor and ability to turn even the most uncomfortable situations into comedy gold.

Amy also joked repeatedly about Cena’s enormous physique, saying his body felt almost unreal in person. She described the WWE star as being so muscular that filming scenes together felt completely surreal. At one point, she compared the experience to having a giant appliance on top of her — a line that immediately became one of the most quoted moments from the interview.

The conversation only became funnier when fellow actor Bill Hader joined in with jokes of his own. Hader teased that professional wrestlers never do anything halfway and always commit fully to every performance, whether it’s inside a wrestling arena or on a movie set. The audience erupted in laughter as the cast continued joking about the now-famous scene.

Although Amy treated the moment like pure comedy, John Cena later admitted the experience felt much more awkward from his perspective. During an appearance on Conan in 2015, Cena explained that the filmmakers intentionally wanted the scene to feel uncomfortable and exaggerated because awkwardness was the entire joke. According to Cena, everyone involved fully leaned into that energy to make the comedy work.
