STUDY REVEALS WOMEN PREFER MEN WITH A BIG BELLY OVER MEN WITH SIX-PACK ABS

Several surveys and studies suggest that a significant number of women find men with a softer “dad bod” more attractive than those with highly defined six-pack abs, especially when it comes to long-term relationships. While social media, fitness magazines, and Hollywood often promote the image of a lean, muscular man as the ultimate standard of male attractiveness, real-world preferences appear to be far more nuanced.
The term “dad bod” generally refers to a physique that is slightly soft around the midsection, not obese but not extremely muscular either. It represents an average, natural body shape that many men develop as they get older and balance careers, family life, and other responsibilities. Over the past decade, the dad bod has become increasingly popular in mainstream culture, challenging the long-standing belief that only highly sculpted physiques are considered attractive.

One of the most widely cited surveys on this topic was conducted by Planet Fitness in 2019. The survey found that nearly 70% of women considered the dad bod attractive. Many participants described this body type as approachable, comfortable, and relatable. Rather than viewing a softer physique as a negative trait, many women associated it with confidence, authenticity, and a healthier attitude toward life.
Additional surveys have produced similar findings. A Dating.com survey reported that approximately 75% of singles preferred a dad bod over an extremely chiseled physique. Respondents often explained that highly muscular bodies can sometimes appear intimidating or overly focused on appearance. In contrast, a more moderate build was frequently perceived as friendlier and easier to connect with on a personal level.

Psychologists and relationship experts suggest there may be several reasons behind this trend. Physical attraction is only one factor in how people choose partners. When considering long-term relationships, qualities such as kindness, reliability, emotional stability, and compatibility often become more important than physical appearance alone. A man with a softer physique may be unconsciously associated with these traits, whether or not such assumptions are actually accurate.
Researchers also point out that extreme muscularity can sometimes signal a lifestyle that requires significant time and effort devoted to exercise, dieting, and maintaining a specific appearance. While many women appreciate fitness and good health, some may prefer a partner whose life appears more balanced and flexible. The dad bod, in this sense, can symbolize moderation rather than perfection.
Another factor may be the growing rejection of unrealistic beauty standards. Just as many women have challenged impossible expectations regarding female bodies, there has been increasing recognition that men also face pressure to meet highly demanding physical ideals. Social media platforms often showcase fitness influencers with exceptionally low body-fat percentages and highly developed muscles, creating standards that are difficult for most people to achieve or maintain. The popularity of the dad bod reflects a broader cultural movement toward accepting more natural and attainable body types.
