Brazilian Woman Found Alive After 130-Foot Rope Jump Fall Dies From Injuries

A tragic accident in Brazil has sparked nationwide outrage after a 21-year-old university student died following a rope-jumping incident in São Paulo state. New details from witnesses suggest that the young woman was still alive and conscious when rescuers reached her, adding a heartbreaking dimension to a case now under criminal investigation.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was participating in a rope-jumping activity on Saturday at the abandoned Ponte do Esqueleto, known locally as the “Skeleton Bridge,” in Limeira, Brazil. The bridge, which stands approximately 130 feet above the ground, has become a popular location for adventure seekers despite concerns about safety and regulation.
According to authorities, Rodrigues de Freitas was released from the bridge by instructors without being properly attached to the safety rope required for the jump. Video footage circulating online appears to show the moment she was launched before onlookers realized that a critical safety connection had not been secured.
Rayza Dias, an off-duty nurse who happened to be nearby, said she immediately rushed toward the scene after witnessing the accident. Reaching the victim required navigating difficult terrain beneath the bridge, but Dias said she was able to reach Rodrigues de Freitas and provide emergency assistance.
In interviews with local media, Dias stated that the young woman was conscious, responsive, and able to communicate when she arrived. The nurse attempted to keep her stable while waiting for emergency responders to reach the location.
Despite those efforts, Rodrigues de Freitas later succumbed to the severe injuries she suffered during the fall.
Authorities quickly launched an investigation into the operation responsible for organizing the jump. Police say the activity was being conducted without proper authorization and may not have met required safety standards. Rope jumping differs from traditional bungee jumping because it uses specialized low-stretch climbing ropes that create a pendulum-like swing rather than an elastic rebound. The system requires precise safety checks and secure attachment procedures before every jump.
Investigators allege that a catastrophic safety failure occurred moments before Rodrigues de Freitas was released. Officials are examining whether negligence, inadequate training, poor supervision, or violations of safety protocols contributed to the tragedy.
Six individuals were arrested in connection with the incident. Three men linked directly to the operation remain under investigation and could face homicide-related charges depending on the findings of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities are also reviewing whether the organizers had the necessary permits and certifications required to conduct adventure-sport activities at the site.
Friends and family described Rodrigues de Freitas as an energetic and ambitious young woman with a bright future ahead of her. She was studying physical education and sports management and dreamed of becoming a teacher. In the hours before the accident, she shared photos and videos on social media showing her excitement about the experience.
Her death has reignited debate across Brazil about safety oversight in adventure tourism and extreme-sports activities. Critics argue that stronger regulations and more rigorous inspections are needed to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
As investigators continue gathering evidence and reviewing video footage, many questions remain unanswered. For the family of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, however, the loss is immeasurable, and the search for accountability has only just begun.
The investigation remains ongoing.
